In 2022, global airlines amassed around $103 billion in supplementary revenue, with $29 billion attributed to baggage fees. This information can be found in the recent Car Trawler Global Estimate of Baggage Fee Revenue.

The report is a collaborative effort between IdeaWorksCompany, a consultancy specializing in aviation and additional revenue, and CarTrawler, a worldwide B2B provider of car rentals and mobility solutions for the travel sector. Annually, IdeaWorksCompany reviews supplementary revenue declarations from airlines around the world, incorporating baggage data for each airline category into their findings.

Revenue primarily stems from three main areas: checked luggage stored in the aircraft’s hold, additional charges for overweight and oversized bags, and, for certain airlines, fees for larger cabin bags. The report emphasizes that income from baggage is a pivotal part of supplementary revenue, consistently contributing to the earnings of airlines in Europe, North America, and Latin America.
